Rhyn decided to construct this scene in the form of two lines that form a cross. The first line is a small path which divides the canvas and vanishes into the horizon. The horizontal line of the cross is then found at the base of the finely drawn fir evergreens. In the distance, stands a lonely elm. Besides the composition, ones eyes are drawn to the foreground. It’s warm hues of orange and red, and the fine detail of the grass and bushes, make us feel as if we were just standing there.
