This autumn painting is very large. Doing a plain air work of this magnitude, for any artist, is quite a challenge . The reason is not only because of the large surface to be covered, but because of the often hostile weather conditions such as the cold, the wind and the rain. Rhyn was persistent. He would spend days on end finishing his work from exactly the same spot until the final strokes, such as we see here in the foreground which were to his liking.
