Rhyn, like Van Gogh, could not stay away from using yellow. Cadmium yellow was his favourite colour, as was Vincent's. Yellow is cheerful and optimistic. Yellow is emotional. All the world over, yellow is associated with the sun and, its life giving warmth. This painting says it all, as it is in a way, a copy of the sun expressed, via a tree. It has a round composition, and as branches of the main tree and its neighbours spike straight up into the sky, the effect of golden rays is simply spectacular.
